TOP 5 THINGS TO DO IN CORNWALL IN MAY

Thursday 30 April 2015

I love May! The sun comes out, the beaches are just starting to fill up & it's time to pull out the BBQ. May in Cornwall is FULL of cultural celebrations. They're so much fun to attend, whether you're Cornish or just visiting. There are loads of events going on in May (click HERE for the full list) but here are my top 5 to go to:

1. St. Ives Food & Drink Festival - Saturday 16th - Sunday 17th May
The only food & drink festival in the UK to be held on the beach, this is one of my favourite festivals. It's a two day event & the perfect excuse to have a drink in the sun & taste some great food while lounging on a beautiful beach. There are some must see cooking demos featuring top chefs from across the county, a delicious produce market & on the beach entertainment.

2. Padstow Obby Oss Festival - Friday 1st May
This May Day festival attracts around 30,000 people each year. You have to get there super early to get a good parking space, but it's well worth it. The town is decorated with flowers, flags & tree branches & the day is celebrated with parades, dancing & music. If you are worried about parking you could always park elsewhere & cycle to Padstow along the infamous 'Camel Trail'.

3. English National Surf Championships - Saturday 2nd - Monday 4th May
This is an amazing chance to see some top surfers doing what they do best. Even if you don't surf, there is such a great atmosphere in Newquay on this weekend.

4. Helston Flora Day - Friday 8th May
Flora day is an ancient festival that celebrates the end of winter. The houses & shops in the town are decorated with greenery & flowers & 1000's of people dance through the streets throughout the day, accompanied by Helston Town Band. The first dancing parade starts from 7am in the morning. The midday dance features around 80 couples dressed in their best clothes, the women wearing elegant dresses & the men, top hats & tails. There is usually a generous fair down by the boating lakes which makes this a really great family day out.

5. Fal River Festival - Friday 22nd - Sunday 31st May
A 10 day event that features something for everyone. Including gig racing, a fish festival, film screenings on ferry's, craft workshops, archery lessons, The Cornish Cake Off & so much more. It's really worth checking out their website & browsing the day to day activities. A festival full of fun for all the family!
