ST. PIRANS DAY

Friday 6 March 2015

Yesterday was ST. PIRANS DAY!

If you don't know, St. Pirans Day is Cornwall's national day. It's held on the 5th of March every year and is named after St. Piran who was the patron saint of Cornwall and tin miners....

It was Evie's first St. Pirans Day! We took her to watch the parade in Penzance where 600 school children, all dressed in black and white and wearing St. Pirans rosettes, did a Furry Dance (a traditional Cornish dance) through the town. Evie LOVED it and constantly waved to the children and danced her legs every time a band came past. We then had to have a proper Cornish dinner (pasty obviously) followed by a saffron bun.
This year St. Austell Brewery pubs were part of a collective 'shout' where over 70 pubs invited locals to sing 'Trelawny', the Cornish national anthem, all at the same time. It was broadcast on the national news and radio. I was lucky enough to take a video of The Lifeboat Inn in St. Ives as their team, plus many locals, sang the anthem. It was such a great atmosphere!

I love Cornwall and I love the culture. I'm so glad that every year more and more people are recognising the importance of St. Pirans day. Every year its becoming a bigger and better spectacle and there is nothing greater than watching communities come together to have a good ole traditional sing.

GOOL PERAN LOWEN!
