CORNISH CREAM TEA: JAM THEN CREAM!

Tuesday 3 March 2015

One of my favourite places to eat in Cornwall is The Godolphin Arms in Marazion...

Although they were great before, they had a refurbishment in April 2014 and the new interior is absolutely stunning. They have taken out the main wall running across the restaurant and have replaced it with bifold doors, to completely take advantage of the stunning view across to St. Michaels Mount. It is well worth a visit if you are in West Cornwall.

It's the first days of Spring and the weather today has been all over the place. We've had hail stones, heavy rain and glorious sunshine. We were really lucky and felt very grateful to catch the view when it was at its sunniest! We were a bit late for the lunch menu today, which was so disappointing because they do a DELICIOUS thai yellow curry. But luckily I had a complete hankering for a cream tea!

I LOVE CREAM TEAS!
There is a great old argument about whether cream teas originate from Cornwall or Devon.
Not only that, but cream tea is prepared SLIGHTLY differently in both counties. Although both come with a pot of tea, in Cornwall the scone is spread with jam followed by cream. In Devon, it's cream followed by jam. This may sound comical to you, but you'd actually be surprised just how different it tastes even with the same ingredients just layered differently.

There is one thing that you can be sure of though. NEVER EVER get into an argument with a Cornish or a Devon person over how it should be eaten and most definitely never ask for butter instead of cream!
For me personally, I prefer to spread on a bit of strawberry jam, followed by a dollop of clotted cream (preferably Rodda's) onto a delicious warm scone. But being Cornish, I am completely biased!

How do you prefer you cream tea? Jam then cream? Cream then jam? Butter? Plain?

    1. It's absolutely stunning! Especially if it's a warm day & they open those bi-fold doors. It's definitely one of my favourite places. x
